About This Job

Position Overview

The Unarmed Roving Reserve Officer serves as an on-call, hourly security professional responsible for providing emergency and short-notice coverage at client locations. This role addresses staffing needs when regular personnel are unavailable or when additional support is required.

This position differs from standard security posts, as it does not involve fixed assignments or schedules. Instead, officers are scheduled for specific reserve windows—designated time periods during which they must be available to accept assignments if contacted by the company.

This function is essential for ensuring uninterrupted client coverage without the need for a dedicated patrol vehicle or a full-time floating officer.

Core Responsibilities

  • Remain accessible by phone or text message during assigned reserve windows.
  • Promptly respond to coverage requests and travel directly to designated client sites when dispatched.
  • Perform all standard security officer duties while on assignment, including:
    1. Conducting patrols and managing access control.
    2. Monitoring premises to prevent unauthorized activity.
    3. Responding to incidents and completing accurate incident and shift reports.
    4. Delivering professional and courteous service to clients and visitors.
  • Maintain communication with dispatch or site supervision during active assignments.
  • Accurately complete timekeeping and post activity documentation.
  • Adhere to all company policies, safety standards, and client-specific requirements.

Note: Officers are not required to remain on company property or limit personal activities during reserve windows, provided they can respond within the required timeframe when called.

Work Schedule

  • Reserve windows are generally scheduled in 2-hour blocks that align with company check-in times, such as 06:00–08:00 or 13:00–15:00.
  • Officers may accept or decline reserve windows based on their availability.
  • If no call is received during a reserve window, no work is performed and no hours are recorded.

Compensation Structure

  • Activation / Travel Pay: $17.50 per hour.
    • This rate applies from the moment an officer accepts a call-in assignment and continues until arrival on site, typically 30–60 minutes.
    • This time is recorded separately on the timesheet.
  • Active Duty Pay: $19.00 per hour.
    • This rate applies from arrival on site through the conclusion of the active shift.
  • Inactive Reserve Window: Unpaid.
    • Officers are free to use their time as they wish when not called to duty.

Additional Compensation Details:

  • Paid time begins when the officer accepts a call or commences travel, whichever occurs first.
  • All paid time qualifies as \"hours worked\" under California law for purposes of minimum wage, overtime, and meal/rest break calculations.
  • Overtime and double-time pay are provided in compliance with California Labor Code Section 510.
  • Wage statements will list activation hours and active-duty hours separately, as required by California Labor Code Section 226.

Response Time Requirement

Reserve Officers must be able to report to an assigned site within 45 to 60 minutes of being contacted. While they are not required to stay within a specific geographic area, they must ensure they can meet this response expectation during their scheduled reserve windows.

Employment Classification

  • Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt.
  • Coverage: Falls under Security-industry employees per California Wage Order 4 or 9, depending on assignment.
  • Benefits Eligibility: Determined in accordance with company policy for part-time or on-call employees.

Qualifications

  • Valid California Guard Card is mandatory.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable personal transportation are required.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt quickly to new environments.
  • Prior experience in security, military, or law enforcement is preferred.

The Roving Reserve Officer role is well-suited for security professionals seeking flexible, on-call work while contributing to dependable and professional client service.
