Job Summary
The Transportation Dispatcher plays a key role in organizing and overseeing daily driver assignments and delivery activities to guarantee the efficient, safe, and punctual distribution of food items. This position serves as the primary communication hub connecting drivers, warehouse personnel, logistics, and sales departments, actively addressing delivery challenges and refining routes to enhance overall productivity.
Key Responsibilities
Driver Scheduling and Dispatching
- Allocate drivers to specific delivery routes, pickups, and backhaul assignments.
- Develop and refine daily and weekly driver schedules.
- Adjust routes in real time in response to delays, vehicle malfunctions, or shifting customer demands.
Communication and Coordination
- Act as the principal contact for drivers using phone, radio, or dispatch platforms.
- Coordinate with warehouse, operations, sales, and customer service teams regarding delivery status, special directions, or service concerns.
- Alert supervisors or safety staff in the event of accidents, injuries, or safety-related occurrences.
Compliance and Safety
- Oversee driver hours of service to maintain adherence to legal and company policies.
- Verify that drivers comply with uniform and personal protective equipment standards.
- Keep precise records of driver logs, delivery paperwork, and incident reports.
Route and Load Management
- Efficiently assign tractors, trailers, and yard equipment.
- Organize backhaul loads to optimize asset use.
- Utilize routing software to design effective delivery paths.
Problem Resolution
- Address delays, customer concerns, vehicle failures, or driver problems promptly.
- Elevate serious issues to management, safety, or maintenance personnel.
- Monitor and resolve exceptions and delivery inconsistencies.
Record Keeping and Reporting
- Maintain records for attendance, dispatch activities, and delivery reports.
- Distribute required documents, such as intercompany mail or memoranda, to drivers and internal groups.
- Review dispatch performance metrics, including on-time delivery rates, downtime, and driver utilization, and propose enhancements.
Required Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; further education in logistics, business, or transportation is beneficial.
- Experience: One to three years in transportation, logistics, or dispatch roles; background in food distribution is advantageous.
- Familiarity with Department of Transportation regulations and driver hours-of-service rules is strongly preferred.
