Assistant to Disabled Artist (West Hollywood)

California Posted 3 days ago tv video radio

About This Job

Hello, my name is Natalie. I am a graduate of film school living with a disability, and I am seeking to hire three to four dedicated individuals to join my team of personal assistants. Previous experience in disability support is not necessary; a genuine willingness to assist is what matters most. I am 31 years old and have Muscular Dystrophy. This position can be either part-time or full-time, with openings for both weekday and weekend shifts. The final schedule will be built around the availability each candidate provides during our interview.

Job Responsibilities

This role involves assisting me with daily living activities, which include transferring in and out of bed, showering, meal preparation, housekeeping, and similar tasks. Essentially, I require support with the routine activities of daily life. My assistants are essential to my independence and well-being, so this position demands a high degree of maturity, responsibility, and, crucially, open and clear communication. I generally look for individuals who are open-minded, sociable, enjoyable to be around, and dependable.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The perfect candidate will be physically fit, strong, reliable, and punctual. They should also be an attentive listener, capable of learning new tasks rapidly, and possess solid communication abilities.

About Me

I relocated to Los Angeles after college to pursue a career in screenwriting and directing. I am very social and enjoy attending concerts, exploring wheelchair-accessible hiking trails, spending time with friends, reading, writing, and playing with my service dog. I have a good sense of humor and love listening to music and going to live shows.

Additional Details

Candidates must be available for at least three days per week, though greater availability is welcomed. Scheduling can accommodate school commitments or other employment. Duties will include help with cooking, light housekeeping, accompanying me to community events and work, assistance with dressing, applying makeup, hair styling, bathing, managing activities of daily living, and providing support with various tasks throughout the day.

The role will also include assisting during occasional travel, both within and outside of California, for vacations and trips. The ideal person would enjoy going to concerts, movies, events, museums, spending time outdoors, and traveling. They should be organized, a dog lover, a competent driver, adaptable, reliable, punctual, a good listener, a quick learner, and a diligent worker who can function independently. Candidates must be active, fit, and strong, both physically and mentally. Specific physical requirements include being able to lift and transfer me, reposition me in bed, and adjust my posture in my wheelchair after receiving training. The job involves standing and walking for prolonged periods and is physically active, not sedentary. Certain COVID-19 precautions are in place. I reside near The Grove and Park La Brea area.
